On VanGami the template appears over your sheet through your phone camera — no printer needed. Trace it, cut, fold and glue. Below are all the steps in text.
What you’ll need
- 2 Letter sheets — office paper, 80 gsm (20 lb)
- Markers
- Pencil — and eraser
- Scissors — small
- Glue stick — or PVA glue
- Pen or a second pencil — to roll the stick around
- Glass — phone stand
Steps
Sheet 1
- Sheet 1: yellow sheet. A yellow sheet should be under the camera now. The template has 2 sheets. The sheet is white — the pieces get their color at the coloring step.
- Flower head. Trace the eight petals in one solid line, going from each dip to a tip and back.
- Flower head: drawing. The circle in the middle is where the center goes. Draw the veins on the petals and the edge of the orange ring.
- Center. Trace the circle: the center of the flower.
- Center: face. Copy the eyes with highlights, the smile, and the cheeks. The seed dots around the edge are optional.
- Yellow. The paper is white: color the whole flower head yellow, right up to the outline. Don’t color the center: it will be brown.
- Flower head: coloring. Ring at the base of the petals and the veins — orange.
- Center: coloring. Circle — brown; eyes and smile — black; cheeks — pink. Don’t color the highlights in the eyes.
Sheet 2
- Sheet 2: green sheet. Remove the previous sheet and put the green sheet in its place, lined up edge to edge. Don’t move the phone — the scale stays the same. The sheet is white — the parts get their color at the coloring step.
- Strip. Trace the rectangle, 4½ × 3⅛ in: it will roll into a stick. You can use a ruler.
- Leaves and circle. Trace the circle and the pair of leaves: the leaves are joined by a narrow strip in the middle.
- Veins. One vein on each leaf, drawn lightly.
- Green. The paper is white: color the leaves and the circle green, all over. On the strip, color only a 1⅛ in band along one long edge: it will end up on the outside of the stick, and the rest will be hidden inside.
Cut
- Cut out: flower head. Cut out the flower head along the solid line: make two cuts that meet at each notch. Turn the sheet, not the scissors.
- Cut out: center. Cut out the center along the circle line.
- Cut out: strip for the stick. Cut out the strip along the lines — you can use a ruler.
- Cut out: leaves and circle — 2 pcs. Cut out the circle and the leaves along the solid line. Don’t cut the strip that joins the leaves.
Stick
- Roll the stick. Lay the strip with the colored band face down and on the far side, long side toward you. Roll it once around the pencil starting from the near, white edge, then spread glue over the rest of the strip and finish rolling it tightly. Pull out the pencil.
Flower
- Center. Put glue on the back of the center and stick it onto the circle in the middle of the flower head, face up.
- Stick on the back. Turn the flower face down. Put glue on the flattened tip of the stick and press it to the middle of the back: the stick runs down between two petals.
- Circle on top. Put glue on the green circle and stick it over the tip of the stick — it will cover it and hold it down. Hold for half a minute.
- Leaves. Turn the flower face up. Put glue on the strip between the leaves and press it onto the front of the stick, about halfway down: leaves out to the sides.
- Fluff up the petals. Gently curl each petal upward by pulling it between your thumb and index finger: the flower will look full and fluffy.
Done. Your sunflower is done. Stand it in a pencil cup or tuck it into a bouquet — smile facing out.
