On VanGami the template appears over your sheet through your phone camera — no printer needed. Trace it, cut, fold and glue. Below are all the steps in text.
What you’ll need
- 4 Letter sheets — office paper, 80 gsm (20 lb)
- Markers
- Pencil — and eraser
- Ruler — 8–12 in
- Scissors — small
- Glue stick
- Skewers — 7 pcs, 7⅞ in long
- Newspaper or wrapping paper — about 19¾ × 8⅝ in — or 2 Letter sheets, glued along the short sides
- 2 more Letter sheets — printer paper — squares for the cone
- Thread or string
- Thread — for the tag
- Glass — phone stand
Steps
Sheet 1
- Sheet 1: yellow sheet. A yellow sheet should be under the camera now. The template has 4 sheets. The sheet is white — the pieces get their color at the coloring step.
- Circles. Trace circles 3½ in across — one for each rose.
- Spiral. In each circle, draw a wavy spiral from the edge to the center: you’ll cut along it. The waves will become petals, so accuracy isn’t important.
- Yellow. The paper is white, but these parts should be this color on both sides: color them up to the outline, then turn the sheet over and color the back.
Sheet 2
- Sheet 2: dark yellow sheet. Remove the previous sheet and put the dark yellow sheet in its place, lined up edge to edge. Don’t move the phone — the scale stays the same. The sheet is white — the parts get their color at the coloring step.
- Circles. Trace circles 3½ in across — one for each rose.
- Spiral. In each circle, draw a wavy spiral from the edge to the center: you’ll cut along it. The waves will become petals, so accuracy isn’t important.
- Dark yellow. The paper is white, but these parts should be this color on both sides: color them up to the outline, then turn the sheet over and color the back.
Sheet 3
- Sheet 3: light yellow sheet. Remove the previous sheet and put the light yellow sheet in its place, lined up edge to edge.
- Light yellow. The paper is white, but these parts should be this color on both sides: color them up to the outline, then turn the sheet over and color the back.
Sheet 4
- Sheet 4: green sheet. Remove the previous sheet and put the green sheet in its place, lined up edge to edge. Don’t move the phone — the scale stays the same. The sheet is white — the parts get their color at the coloring step.
- Leaf: outline. Trace the solid line — the edge of the “Leaf” piece. You’ll cut along it. There are 3 of these pieces — trace them all.
- Vein. Down the middle of each leaf runs a fold line, a dash-dot line, from the base to the tip.
- Strips. Seven strips, 4¾ × 5/16 in — use a ruler. You’ll wrap the skewers with them.
- Green. The paper is white, but these parts should be this color: color them in completely, up to the outline. Move the marker in one direction.
Cut
- Cut out: yellow circle — 3 pcs. Cut out the circles along the solid line. Leave the spiral inside for now.
- Cut out: dark yellow circle — 2 pcs. Cut out the circles along the solid line. Leave the spiral inside for now.
- Cut out: light yellow circle — 2 pcs. Cut out the circles along the solid line. Leave the spiral inside for now.
- Cut out: leaf — 3 pcs. Cut with scissors along the solid line. Turn the sheet, not the scissors — the cut will come out neater.
- Cut out: stem strip — 7 pcs. Cut out the seven strips along a ruler.
- Cut along the spiral. Cut each circle along the wavy spiral, from the edge to the middle. Trim off the narrow tail at the very start: you’ll get a long strip with a small circle on the end.
Roll
- Roll the strip. Start at the outer end: roll the strip tightly, wavy edge up, until you reach the circle in the middle.
- Let go. Set the roll on the table and let go: it will unroll on its own to about 2 in. Fluff the petals with your fingers.
- Glue to the base. The small circle in the middle of the spiral is the base. Put a drop of PVA glue on it and press the rose down onto it for half a minute: the roll won’t unroll again.
- Six more roses. Roll and glue the other six circles the same way. That makes seven roses in all: three in one shade and two each in the other two.
Bouquet
- Stems. Apply glue to a green strip and wrap it around the skewer in a spiral: start ⅝ in from the pointed end and work down 3⅞ in. Do this for all seven skewers.
- Rose on a stem. Put a drop of PVA glue on the bare tip of the skewer and push it through the base of the rose, right in the center — the tip will go into the roll. Do the same with all seven roses, then let the glue set for 10 minutes.
- Rose bunch. Gather the roses into a bunch: one in the middle, six around it, alternating the shades. Tie the stems together with thread or tape.
- Leaves. Fold the three leaves lengthwise along the line and glue them to the stems between the roses: the tips peek out from under the bunch.
Cone
- Wrapping sheets. The outer sheet is newspaper or wrapping paper, about 19¾ × 8⅝ in; if you don't have any, glue two sheets of printer paper along the short sides. Trim two more sheets of printer paper into 8¼ × 8¼ in squares.
- Two squares. Lay one square on top of the other offset, so the corners point different ways. Put the bouquet on top along the diagonal: wrap the stems into a cone, and the sheet corners will stand up above the roses.
- Outer sheet. Wrap the outer sheet around the top, gathering it into small pleats at the stems. Fold the top edge back slightly.
- Ribbon and bow. Tie the cone tightly with a ribbon at its narrowest point and make a bow. Leave the ends long — 5⅞ in each.
- Tag. From an offcut of printer paper, folded in half, cut out a 1⅛ × 1¾ in tag, write on it, and tie it with thread to the ribbon.
Done. The bouquet is done. You can make the roses in any color — the template is the same.
