Sugar Skull Bookmark

A sugar skull in a wreath of marigolds and flowers peeks out of a book, and a strip with marigolds and little hearts sits between the pages. Two pieces of thick paper and one glue joint.

What you’ll need

• 2 Letter sheets — office paper, 80 gsm (20 lb)
• Markers
• Pencil — and eraser
• Scissors — small
• Glue stick — or PVA glue
• Book or notebook — to try on the bookmark
• Glass — phone stand

Steps

Trace

1. Sturdy sheet from two. Apply glue stick over the whole surface of a sheet of printer paper, press a second sheet onto it, and smooth with your palm from the middle to the edges. You'll get a thick sheet — work on that one. Put it back in the same spot, edge to edge; don't move the phone.
2. Head: outline. Trace the skull with its flower crown with a solid line: the line goes smoothly around the flowers and leaves, with no tiny zigzags.
3. Head: drawing. Copy with thin lines the eyes inside petals, the nose, the smile with stitches, the heart on the forehead and five flowers with leaves.
4. Strip: outline. Trace the strip with a solid line: the long sides, the top and the tail with a notch. The strip lies on its side — that way it fits in the frame.
5. Strip: drawing. Copy the marigolds, the hearts, the border with dots and the glue line near the top edge: up to that line the strip goes under the head, and that part has no drawing.

Color

6. Color: head. Petals by the eyes, leaves and outer flowers — turquoise, the heart and two flowers — pink, the big marigold and the dots — orange. Eyes and nose — black, don’t color the highlights. The skull stays white.
7. Color: strip. Marigolds — orange: leave the ring inside white and color the center with an orange dot. Hearts — pink, the border dots — turquoise.

Cut

8. Cut out: head. Cut out the head along the solid line: a white border stays around the flowers — don’t cut in between the petals.
9. Cut out: strip. Cut out the strip along the straight lines; for the tail at the bottom, make two cuts toward each other, to the middle.

Glue

10. Head onto the strip. Put glue on the top of the strip — from the edge to the line, design side up. Lay the head on top, design side up: the middle of the skull goes over the middle of the strip, and the chin covers the line. Press down.

Check

11. Put it in the book. Put the bookmark strip between the pages, tail down: the skull in its wreath peeks out above the top edge of the book.

Done. Your bookmark is done. Slide the strip between the pages — the skull in its wreath will peek out above the book and show where you stopped.
