Peeking Kitty Bookmark

An orange kitty holds onto the edge of the page with its paws, and its head peeks out of the book. Two pieces: the kitty down to its chest, and a back strip with a tail — it goes behind the page, so from the other side you see the kitty from behind.

What you’ll need

• Letter sheet — office paper, 80 gsm (20 lb)
• Markers
• Pencil — and eraser
• Scissors — small
• Glue stick — or PVA glue
• Book or notebook — to try on the bookmark
• Glass — phone stand

Steps

Trace

1. Kitty and back strip: outlines. Trace the kitty with its ears and paws, and the back strip under it, with a solid line. There’s a notch between the paws — trace it too.
2. Kitty and back strip: drawing. Copy with thin lines the ears, the eyes with highlights, the nose, the mouth, the whiskers, the stripes on the forehead and the chin line, and the toes on the paws. On the back strip, copy the stripes, the tail tip and the glue line near the edge.

Color

3. Color: kitty and back strip. The kitty and the back strip — orange, stripes — brown, the insides of the ears, the cheeks and the nose — pink. Eyes — black; don’t color the highlights. The tail tip and the edge of the back strip up to the line stay white.

Cut

4. Cut out: kitty and back strip — 2 pcs. Cut out the kitty along the solid line: make two cuts that meet at each ear, and go into the notch between the paws from both sides.

Glue

5. Back strip behind the head. Lay the kitty face down and put glue on the head — down to the narrow part where the paws begin. Lay the back strip on top, design side up: the line at the narrow part, the tail pointing down, in the middle.

Check

6. Slide it onto the page. Open a book or notebook. Slip the kitty onto the top edge of a page: the page goes between the paws and the back strip all the way to the line. The head peeks out above the page, and the paws rest on the front of it.

Done. Your bookmark is done. The kitty hangs on the edge of the page: paws in front, back and tail behind the page. Turn the page and you’ll see it from behind.
