Mini Note Envelopes

Two 2¾ × 1¾ in envelopes for notes to a friend: one with a pink flap, one with a lilac flap, and a little heart for a clasp. The tip of the flap tucks under the heart, so the envelope opens and closes without glue.

What you’ll need

• Letter sheet — office paper, 80 gsm (20 lb)
• Markers
• Pencil — and eraser
• Scissors — small
• Glue stick — or PVA glue

Steps

Trace

1. Pink envelope: outlines. Trace the envelope template — the wall with four tabs — and the little heart on the right with a solid line. You’ll cut along these lines.
2. Pink envelope: folds. The four dashed lines along the edges of the wall are the folds: 1 marks the sides, 2 the bottom, 3 the top. Don’t cut along them.
3. Pink envelope: drawing. Copy with thin lines the dashed stitching on the top tab and, on the little heart, the highlight and a line across it: the glue goes below that line.
4. Lilac envelope: outlines. Trace the envelope template — the wall with four tabs — and the little heart on the right with a solid line. You’ll cut along these lines.
5. Lilac envelope: folds. The four dashed lines along the edges of the wall are the folds: 1 marks the sides, 2 the bottom, 3 the top. Don’t cut along them.
6. Lilac envelope: drawing. Copy with thin lines the dashed stitching on the top tab and, on the little heart, the highlight and a line across it: the glue goes below that line.
7. Notes: outlines. Trace the two rectangles: these are the notes, and they’re smaller than the envelope.
8. Notes: lines. Draw three lines on each one: they make writing easy.

Color

9. Color: pink envelope. Color the top tab pink and go over the stitching with a black dashed line. Color the little heart red and leave the highlight white. Don’t color the wall or the other tabs.
10. Color: lilac envelope. Color the top tab lilac and go over the stitching with a black dashed line. Color the little heart red and leave the highlight white. Don’t color the wall or the other tabs.

Cut

11. Cut out: pink envelope — 2 pcs. Cut out the envelope along the solid line, and the heart separately. Don’t cut the dashed lines.
12. Cut out: lilac envelope — 2 pcs. Cut out the envelope along the solid line, and the heart separately. Don’t cut the dashed lines.
13. Cut out: note — 2 pcs. Cut out the notes along the straight lines.

Fold

14. Side flaps. Turn the envelopes face down. Fold both side flaps along dashed lines 1 onto the back panel and crease the folds.

Glue

15. Glue the pocket. Put glue on the bottom half of the side flaps. Fold the bottom flap up along dashed line 2 and press it onto them — now you have a pocket.
16. Heart clasp. Put glue on the white side of the heart — only the pointed bottom, a little less than half: up to the line on the front. Glue it to the middle of the pocket’s top edge: the line goes along the edge, and the top of the heart sticks up freely.

Check

17. Add a note and close it. Write a note and slip it into the pocket. Fold the top flap down along dashed line 3 and tuck the tip under the heart — the envelope is closed.

Done. The envelopes are done. To open one, lift the heart and pull out the tip of the flap — the clasp works again and again.
