Animal Pencil Huggers

A bunny and a bear hug pencils: the face is above the pencil, and the paws clasp around it in front. The arms are a strip glued to the back; the paws hold the pencil by themselves, so you can pull it out and put in a different one.

What you’ll need

• Letter sheet — office paper, 80 gsm (20 lb)
• Markers
• Pencil — and eraser
• Scissors — small
• Glue stick — or PVA glue
• Pencils — 2 pcs, regular hexagonal or round
• Cup — for pencils — optional
• Glass — phone stand

Steps

Trace

1. Animals: outlines. Trace the bunny and the bear with a solid line — ears, head, body with feet — and the two arm strips with paws at the ends. You’ll cut along these lines.
2. Animals: folds. Each strip has two short dashed lines: the middle between them will lie on the back. Don’t cut along the dashed lines.
3. Animals: drawing. Copy with thin lines: the eyes with highlights, the nose and mouth, cheeks, the insides of the ears and, on the bear, the muzzle and tummy, plus the feet. Add pads on the paws.

Color

4. Color: animals. The bunny is white: the insides of the ears, cheeks and paw pads — pink. The bear and the ends of its strip — brown; the muzzle, tummy and paw pads — beige; the insides of the ears and cheeks — pink. Eyes and nose — black; don’t color the highlights.

Cut

5. Cut out: animals — 4 pcs. Cut out the animals and the strips along the solid line. For the inner corners — by the ears and under the head — cut in with the scissors from both sides.

Glue

6. Arms onto the back. Turn the animals over design side down. Spread glue across the back, right under the head, and glue on the arm strip design side up: the dashed lines line up with the edges of the body.
7. Hug the pencil. Turn the animal design side up and lay the pencil on its tummy: the top end goes under the chin. Wrap the arms around the pencil, put a drop of glue on the lower paw, and press the other one on top.

Check

8. Check. Stand the pencil tip down: the animal looks at you, and its paws hug the pencil in front. It holds snugly; to change the pencil, pull it down.

Done. The animals are hugging the pencils. You can pull a pencil out and put in another one of the same thickness.
