On VanGami the template appears over your sheet through your phone camera — no printer needed. Trace it, cut, fold and glue. Below are all the steps in text.

What you’ll need

Steps

Trace

  1. Sturdy sheet from two. Apply glue stick over the whole surface of a sheet of printer paper, press a second sheet onto it, and smooth with your palm from the middle to the edges. You'll get a thick sheet — work on that one. Put it back in the same spot, edge to edge; don't move the phone.
  2. Board: outline. A square board with a pocket to the right of it: tabs on the top and bottom, and a flap on the right. Using the screen, mark dots at the corners, then connect them with a ruler.
  3. Board: folds. Draw the line between the board and the pocket, and the lines by the tabs and the flap, as dashed lines. Number the tabs 1 and 2.
  4. Board: drawing. On the square, draw a frame and a 3 × 3 grid with a ruler. On the pocket, draw a scoreboard: an X, an O and lines between them. On the flap, draw an arrow.
  5. Game pieces: outlines. Trace five little squares and five little circles, ¾ in each. It’s easy to trace the circles around a coin.
  6. Game pieces: symbols. On the squares, draw X’s; on the circles, draw O’s, as big as the whole piece.

Color

  1. Color: board. Go over the grid in black, making it a little thicker. On the scoreboard, color the X red and the O blue.
  2. Color: game pieces. Color the X’s red and the O’s blue. Make the lines thick so you can see the piece from far away.

Cut

  1. Cut out: board. Cut out the board together with the pocket, the two tabs, and the flap. Don’t cut along the dashed lines.
  2. Cut out: game pieces — 10 pcs. First cut off the strip with the squares and the strip with the circles, then cut them into game pieces.

Glue

  1. Fold the pocket. Lay the board drawing side down. Fold tabs 1 and 2 over onto the pocket and put glue on them, then fold the pocket over onto the board: the tabs will stick to the board. Don’t glue the flap — that leaves a slot on the side for the game pieces.
  2. Game pieces into the pocket. Lift the edge of the pocket and slide the game pieces in, in two stacks, through the slot on the side, all the way in. Fold the flap over and tuck it into the slot along the board — the pieces won’t fall out.

Play

  1. Play a round. Turn the board drawing side up. Take turns: X, then O. Whoever gets three in a row first — across, down, or diagonally — wins.

Done. The game is done. Keep the game pieces in the pocket, and make a tally mark on the scoreboard for each win.
