Paper Makeup

A beauty salon for a paper doll: two masks with cutouts for the eyes and mouth — you place them over the face and swap them — plus a bow, a palette with a mirror, a comb, a brush, a lipstick, and hair curlers. Everything is drawn from the template, colored, and cut out of two sheets; the doll is glued onto a sheet of notebook paper.

On VanGami the template appears over your sheet through your phone camera — no printer needed. Trace it, cut, fold and glue. Below are all the steps in text.

What you’ll need

Steps

Sheet 1

  1. Sheet 1: white sheet for the doll. The white sheet for the doll should be under the camera now. The template has 2 sheets.
  2. Doll and bow: outlines. Trace the doll with a solid line — hair, neck, and shoulders in one outline — and the bow at the bottom right. You’ll cut along these lines.
  3. Doll and bow: drawing. Copy the face in thin lines: closed eyes with three lashes each, eyebrows, nose, and lips. Then the headband, strands of hair, the neckline of the top, and the creases of the bow.
  4. Masks: outlines. Trace the two masks, each with three cutouts: two for the eyes and one for the mouth. Trace the cutouts with a solid line too — those get cut out.
  5. Masks: drawing. Draw a short nose-bridge arc between the cutouts. There’s no other drawing on the masks.
  6. Color: doll and bow. Face and neck in skin tone, hair in copper, headband and bow in red, top and lips in pink. Outline the contours in black at the end.
  7. Color: masks. Color one mask mint and the other pink; leave the cutouts uncolored. Outline the masks and the edges of the cutouts in black.

Sheet 2

  1. Sheet 2: white sheet for the set. Remove the previous sheet and put the white sheet for the set in its place, lined up edge to edge. Don’t move the phone — the scale stays the same.
  2. Palette: outlines. Two rectangles with rounded corners, drawn with a ruler: the long one, 2⅝ × 4⅛ in, is the palette itself; the short one, 2⅝ × 2 in, is the cover.
  3. Palette: fold. The fold line divides the long piece in half. Dash-dot line — valley fold (toward you), with the drawing inside.
  4. Palette: drawing. The top half has a mirror with glints; the bottom half has four eyeshadow pans. The cover has a daisy with dots around it.
  5. Set: outlines. Trace the comb, brush, and lipstick. Between the comb’s teeth are narrow wedges: two straight lines each, meeting at the back.
  6. Set: drawing. On the brush: bristles and ferrule. On the lipstick: a slanted stick, a rim beneath it, and a band on the tube. On the comb: a stripe along the back.
  7. Curlers: outlines. Two identical strips, drawn with a ruler: 2½ × 1¾ in each.
  8. Curlers: drawing. At the left edge of each strip, mark off a glue area ⅜ in wide with a line. To the right of it, draw three rows of dots.
  9. Color: palette. Case and cover in pink, mirror in light blue, pans in four different colors; the daisy is white with a yellow center. Outline the contours in black.
  10. Color: set. Comb in coral, brush handle in pink, bristles in copper, lipstick stick in red, tube and brush ferrule in yellow; the lipstick rim is white. Outline the contours in black.
  11. Color: curlers. Strips in yellow, dots in copper. Leave the glue area white.

Cut

  1. Cut out: doll and bow — 2 pcs. Cut out the doll in one outline, then the bow. In the gaps between the hair and shoulders, run the scissors twice: along the edge of the hair and along the shoulder, both times up to the neck.
  2. Cut out: masks — 2 pcs. Cut out both masks along the outline. For the eye and mouth cutouts, lightly fold the mask across the cutout, make a cut in the fold, and follow the line with the scissors; then smooth the mask flat.
  3. Cut out: palette — 2 pcs. Cut out the palette and the cover. Round the corners in a single motion, turning the sheet as you cut.
  4. Cut out: set — 3 pcs. Cut out the comb, brush, and lipstick. For the comb teeth, two straight cuts run from the tips toward the back and meet at a point — the wedge falls out by itself.
  5. Cut out: curlers — 2 pcs. Cut out two strips ruler-straight: with straight edges the tube comes out even.

Fold

  1. Fold the palette. Lay a ruler along the dashed line and lift the top half up against it. Fold the piece with the drawing inside, crease the fold with your fingernail, and open it: the mirror is in the lid.
  2. Curve the curler strips. Wrap each strip around a marker with the drawing facing out and let go. The strip will stay curved — this keeps the tube from coming apart later.

Glue

  1. Cover — onto the lid. Close the palette. Apply glue to the back of the cover and glue it onto the lid, on the outside, edge to edge.
  2. Glue the curlers. Apply glue to the white area and close the tube: the other edge lies on the glue up to the line. Hold for 10 seconds; do the second one the same way.
  3. Doll — onto the notebook sheet. Apply glue to the back of the doll and glue it to the middle of the backing sheet. Smooth it out from the middle to the edges.
  4. Bow — onto the headband. A drop of glue on the headband, on the right. Glue the bow by its middle, slightly slanted: the edges stay free.

Play

  1. Place the mask. Lay the mint mask over the doll’s face — no glue. The eyes and lips should show through the cutouts; if they don’t, trim the cutout a little.
  2. Swap the mask. Take off the mint mask and put on the pink one. The masks aren’t glued — swap them as much as you like.
  3. The salon is open. Arrange the set around the sheet: palette, lipstick, brush, comb, curlers. Open the palette — the salon is ready.

Done. The salon is ready: swap the masks, style the doll’s hair, open the palette. Cut new masks from the same pattern, in any color.
