Dress-Up Doll: Gamer Girl

Dress-Up Doll: Gamer Girl

A paper gamer-girl doll, 4½ in tall: a yellow hoodie with a game console in her hands, a dress, and cat-ear headphones. The outfits stay on with tabs and can be swapped as often as you like, and the doll stands on a two-piece stand, no glue.

On VanGami the template appears over your sheet through your phone camera — no printer needed. Trace it, cut, fold and glue. Below are all the steps in text.

What you’ll need

Steps

Trace

  1. Sturdy sheet from two. Apply glue stick over the whole surface of a sheet of printer paper, press a second sheet onto it, and smooth with your palm from the middle to the edges. You'll get a thick sheet — work on that one. Put it back in the same spot, edge to edge; don't move the phone.
  2. Doll and stand: outlines. Trace the doll with a solid line — the head with the bun, arms, legs and the base plate under the feet as one outline — and the two half-circle stand pieces on the right.
  3. Doll and stand: slits. The short lines are slits: two at the bottom of the base plate and one on each stand piece, from the curved edge to the middle.
  4. Doll: drawing. Copy in thin lines the bangs made of three arcs, the strands by the cheeks, the highlight on the hair and the face: oval eyes with an eyelid, a pupil and a highlight, and a mouth. Then the tank top, shorts and shoes.
  5. Hoodie: outline. Trace the hoodie together with its four tabs: two above the shoulders and two on the sides of the sleeves.
  6. Hoodie: drawing. The hood as an arc on the shoulders, an elastic band along the bottom, and arms bent toward the stomach: in the palms, a game console with a screen.
  7. Dress: outline. Trace the dress with its bell-shaped skirt and four tabs — they are in the same places as on the hoodie.
  8. Dress: drawing. A collar with a bow, short sleeves, a belt, two pleats on the skirt and a trim along the hem. Below the sleeves — the doll’s arms.
  9. Headphones: outline. Trace the headband arc with the ear cups at its ends, the two cat ears and three tabs: one on top and two on the sides.
  10. Headphones: drawing. A line along the arc splits it into the headband on the outside and a strip of hair beneath it. Each cat ear has a triangle inside, and each ear cup has a circle.

Color

  1. Color: doll. Skin in skin tone, hair and eyes in light brown, cheeks and mouth in pink, shorts in purple, shoes, waistband and hair tie in yellow, eyelids and pupils in black. Leave the highlights in the eyes and on the hair, the tank top and the base plate white.
  2. Color: hoodie. Hoodie in yellow, game console in purple, palms in skin tone. Go over the hood, the elastic band and the screen with the marker a second time — they will come out darker; leave the tabs white.
  3. Color: dress. Dress in purple, bow and belt in yellow, arms in skin tone. Leave the collar, the trim and the tabs white.
  4. Color: headphones. Headband, cat ears and ear cups in dark gray, the strip under the headband in light brown, like the hair. Triangles and circles in yellow; leave the tabs white.

Outlines

  1. Outline in black. Go over all the drawing lines and the edges of the pieces with a black marker — on the doll, the outfits and the headphones. Leave the tabs and stand pieces in pencil.

Cut

  1. Cut out: doll and stand — 3 pcs. Cut out the doll in one outline, then the two stand pieces. At the neck, bring the scissors in from both sides — from the cheek and from the shoulder. Make the four slits with one cut each, from the edge to the end of the line.
  2. Cut out: hoodie. Cut out the hoodie along the outline together with the tabs: at the corners by the tabs, bring the scissors in from both sides.
  3. Cut out: dress. Cut out the dress along the outline together with the tabs.
  4. Cut out: headphones. Cut out the headphones: first the outer edge with the cat ears and three tabs, then the inner arc — from one ear cup to the other.

Assemble

  1. Stand the doll up. Slide both stand pieces onto the base plate under the doll’s feet, slit into slit, from below until they stop: the pieces will stand crosswise. The doll stands on its own, no glue.

Play

  1. Place the hoodie. Hold the hoodie up to the doll, shoulders to shoulders. The tabs still stick out above the shoulders and at the sides.
  2. Fold the tabs. Fold the four tabs back, behind the doll: first the two over the shoulders, then the two around the arms. Crease the folds with your fingernail — the hoodie stays on.
  3. Cat-ear headphones. Put the headphones on top of the head and fold the three tabs back: the top one and the two side ones.
  4. Change into the dress. Unfold the tabs, take off the hoodie and put on the dress the same way: shoulders to shoulders, four tabs back. Swap outfits as often as you like.

Done. The doll is done: change her clothes and swap outfits. Make a new outfit yourself: trace an existing one, tabs included, and draw your own design.
