Pillow Box

A small 3½ × 1⅝ in pillow box from a single piece: you glue a tube, and the ends close with curved tabs, no glue needed. The flower pattern is drawn with markers. Great for earrings, a ring or a note.

What you’ll need

• Letter sheet — office paper, 80 gsm (20 lb)
• Markers
• Pencil — and eraser
• Ruler — 8–12 in
• Empty pen — to score the folds
• Scissors — small
• Glue stick — or PVA glue
• Glass — phone stand

Steps

Trace

1. Outline. A rectangle made of two panels, with bulging arcs at the edges and a narrow tab at the bottom. Draw the straight lines with a ruler and the arcs freehand, smoothly.
2. Fold lines. The straight line between the panels, the line by the tab and the four arcs inside are dashed. Each arc is like a mirror image of an edge arc.
3. Draw. On each panel, draw five little flowers and a few dots. A little flower is five circles around a center.

Color

4. Color. Petals — pink, centers — yellow, dots — light blue. Leave the curved tabs white.

Cut

5. Cut out: pillow box. Cut out the piece together with the tab. Cut the curves smoothly, turning the sheet, not the scissors.

Fold

6. Score the curves. Press firmly along each dashed curve with an empty pen, and along the two straight lines with a ruler. Whether the ends close depends on this.

Glue

7. Glue the tube. Put glue on the narrow tab and fold it toward the white side. Fold the piece along the middle line with the drawing facing out: the free edge will land on the tab — press it down.

Assemble

8. Open up the pillow box. Once the glue has set, gently squeeze the tube at the sides — the panels will curve out into a pillow shape.
9. Close one end. Press one curved tab with your finger, then the other — they’ll fold inward along the curves and close the end.
10. Gift and second end. Put a gift in through the open end. Close it the same way: press both curved tabs.

Done. The pillow box is done. To open it, press the edge of a curved tab — it will pop back out.
