On VanGami the template appears over your sheet through your phone camera — no printer needed. Trace it, cut, fold and glue. Below are all the steps in text.
What you’ll need
- 3 Letter sheets — office paper, 80 gsm (20 lb)
- Markers
- Pencil — and eraser
- Ruler — 8–12 in
- Scissors — small
- Glue stick
- Empty pen — to score the folds
- Surprise — a candy or a small gift — optional
- Glass — phone stand
Steps
Sheet 1
- Sheet 1: kraft sheet. The kraft sheet should be under the camera now. The template has 3 sheets. The sheet is white — the pieces get their color at the coloring step.
- Wall: outline. Trace the long strip with a step at one end — this is the cake’s wall; it runs diagonally across the whole sheet. Check it with a ruler: length 10¼ in, width 2⅛ in.
- Wall: cuts. The short lines along the edge are the cuts for the teeth, one every ⅜ in. Each one goes ⅜ in in from the edge, up to the fold line, which you’ll draw in the next step.
- Wall: fold. The fold line runs through the ends of the cuts: trace it as a dashed line, using a ruler. Don’t cut along it.
- Wall: glue area. At the end without teeth, mark off a strip ⅜ in wide. You’ll apply glue to it; don’t cut along this line.
- Bottom: outline. Trace the solid line — the edge of the “Bottom” piece. You’ll cut along it.
- Orange. The paper is white, but these parts should be this color: color them in completely, up to the outline. Move the marker in one direction.
Sheet 2
- Sheet 2: pink sheet. Remove the previous sheet and put the pink sheet in its place, lined up edge to edge. Don’t move the phone — the scale stays the same. The sheet is white — the parts get their color at the coloring step.
- Rim: outline. Trace the pink strip — it also runs diagonally: one edge is straight, and frosting drips hang from the other. You can change the shape of the drips, but check the length with a ruler: 10⅝ in.
- Rim: cuts. Along the straight edge, trace the same cuts, one every ⅜ in: ⅜ in in from the edge, up to the future fold line.
- Rim: fold. The fold line runs through the ends of the cuts: trace it as a dashed line, using a ruler.
- Rim: glue area. At the end without teeth, mark off a strip ⅜ in wide — the glue area.
- Lid circle: outline. Trace the solid line — the edge of the “Lid circle” piece. You’ll cut along it.
- Lid circle: lettering. Copy the lettering with thin lines — or write your own greeting. The five crosses along the arc mark where the candles go.
- Pink. The paper is white, but these parts should be this color: color them in completely, up to the outline. Move the marker in one direction.
- Trace the lettering. Trace the lettering and the little heart with a raspberry marker. Leave the candle crosses in pencil.
Sheet 3
- Sheet 3: white sheet. Remove the previous sheet and put the white sheet in its place, lined up edge to edge. Don’t move the phone — the scale stays the same.
- Plate and note: outlines. Trace the outlines of 2 pieces with a solid line: the plate and the note. You’ll cut along these lines.
- Plate and note: drawing. On the plate: four short arcs (the cake will sit between them) and dots around the edge. On the note: a heart and two lines to write on.
- Candles: outlines. Trace five rectangles with an extension at the bottom — these are the candles — and five flames, each with a stem.
- Candles: stripes. Draw diagonal stripes on each candle; leave the narrow edge on the right clean — the glue goes there. Inside each flame, draw a small inner flame.
- Color: plate and note. Dots on the plate in raspberry, the heart on the note in red.
- Color: candles. Stripes in red; the extension at the bottom and the flame in yellow; the center of the flame in orange.
Cut
- Cut out: wall. Cut out the wall along the solid line with long strokes of the scissors. Leave the short lines at the edge for now.
- Cut out: bottom. Cut with scissors along the solid line. Turn the sheet, not the scissors — the cut will come out neater.
- Cut out: lid rim. Cut out the rim along the solid line: follow the drips smoothly, turning the sheet as you go. Leave the short lines on the straight edge for now.
- Cut out: lid circle. Cut only along the outer circle. The crosses inside are just marks — don’t cut along them.
- Cut out: plate and note — 2 pcs. Cut the plate only along the outer circle: the arcs inside are marks — don’t cut along them. Cut the note along its rectangle.
- Cut out: candles and flames — 10 pcs. Cut out the five candles and five flames along the solid line. Flip the flames over and color the back the same way: they’re seen from every side.
Fold
- Score the folds. Lay a ruler along the dashed line and score it with an empty pen — once, pressing down firmly. Do the same on both strips.
- Cut the teeth. On the wall and on the rim, cut the edge along the short lines — up to the scored line, no further. You’ll get a fringe of teeth.
- Bend the teeth. Lift each strip and bend the teeth away from you, downward, along the scored line — almost to a right angle. Let go: the fold will stay marked.
Box
- Roll the wall. Apply glue to the end without teeth, up to the pencil line. Roll the strip into a ring with the teeth down and the pencil lines on the outside, and lay the other edge over the glue — exactly up to the line.
- Glue in the bottom. Bend the teeth inward and stand the ring on the table. Apply glue to the teeth, lower the bottom circle onto them and press with your fingers.
- Set the box on the plate. Apply glue to the middle of the plate — the circle between the four arcs — and set the box on it.
Lid
- Try on the rim. Wrap the pink strip around the box without glue, teeth up, and bring the edge to the pencil line. The ring should fit loosely, with a gap of 1/16 in.
- Glue the rim. Apply glue to the end without teeth, up to the line, and glue the ring exactly as you tried it on, right on the box. Hold the seam for half a minute.
- Fold in the rim teeth. While the ring is still on the box, fold all its teeth inward — they’ll rest on the top edge of the wall.
- Prepare the circle. Flip the circle text side down, with the top of the text pointing away from you, and make a pencil mark at the far edge. Apply glue around the edge of the circle in a band ⅜ in wide.
- Set the ring. Take the ring off the box, flip it teeth down and set it on the glue: seam to the mark, with an equal margin from the edge of the circle all the way around.
Candles
- Candle tabs. On each candle, cut the yellow extension into four tabs: first in half, then each half in half again.
- Roll the candle. Lay a pencil against the white edge on the back side and roll the candle around it with the stripes facing out. Apply glue to the white edge, cover it with the other edge and slide the tube off.
- Tabs and flame. Bend the four tabs outward — the candle will stand up. Apply glue to the flame’s stem, insert it into the tube from the top and pinch the edge with your fingers.
- Four more candles. Roll the other four candles the same way and put a flame in each one. That makes five candles in all.
- Candles on the lid. Flip the lid text side up. Around each cross, apply a spot of glue about ¾ in across, set a candle on it and press down the tabs, supporting the circle from underneath with your fingers.
Assemble
- Note. Write a wish on the note and put it in the box. A candy or a small gift will fit next to it.
- Close the cake. Put the lid on the box: the frosting drips will lie over the wall. The lid comes off — hold it by the rim, not by the candles.
Done. The cake box is done. Take the lid off by the rim, not by the candles.
