On VanGami the template appears over your sheet through your phone camera — no printer needed. Trace it, cut, fold and glue. Below are all the steps in text.
What you’ll need
- 2 Letter sheets — office paper, 80 gsm (20 lb)
- Markers
- Pencil — and eraser
- Scissors — small
- Tape — clear, wide
- Glue stick — or PVA glue
- Paper strips
- Glass — phone stand
Steps
Fold
- Sturdy sheet from two. Cover a sheet of printer paper with glue stick over the whole area, press a second sheet on top, and smooth it with your palm from the middle to the edges. You get a thick sheet — make the mask from it.
- Fold the sheet in half. Fold the sheet in half lengthwise: long edge to long edge. Crease the fold with your fingernail — the middle of the mask will run along it.
Trace
- Top: ear and forehead. Place the sheet with the fold on the left — on the blue dashed line in the middle, sheet corner in the template’s corner mark: the sheet will fill the right half of the frame. Trace the line with a pencil from the fold across the ear and make a short mark on the fold.
- Bottom: eye, cheek and nose. Slide the sheet along the fold until the mark and the edge of the fold line up with the template. Extend the line to the fold, then trace the eye, the cut by the nose and the dot for the elastic.
Cut
- Cut out the mask. Don’t unfold the sheet: cut both layers at once along the line from fold to fold. Then make the cut by the nose, up to the end of the short line.
- Eye slits. Put the mask on an eraser and poke a pencil through the middle of the eye — both layers. Put the scissors into the hole and cut out the eye along the line.
- Holes for the elastic. Cover the dot near the edge with tape on both sides of the folded mask — this keeps the edge from tearing. Put the mask on an eraser and poke a pencil through the dot, both layers at once.
Color
- Unfold. Open the mask like a book: the pencil lines stay underneath. Bend the middle fold the other way, so the ridge points toward you.
- Black. The sheet is white but the mask is black: color its face with a black marker. Don’t color the triangles in the ears, the nose, the whiskers, or the 3/16 in strip around the eyes — first sketch them in pencil following the step picture.
- Yellow. Use the yellow marker to color the triangles in the ears and the nose, and draw three whiskers on each cheek — on the white spots that are left.
- Green. Use green to color the white strip around the eyes, with sharp corners.
Assemble
- Nose tucks. Tuck the edge of the cheek ⅝ in under the nose at the bottom edge and, holding it in place, tape the seam on the back. Do the same on the other side: the nose will stick out.
- Ears. Turn the mask face up. Fold each ear in half lengthwise — from the tip to the middle of the base, ridge toward you. The fold should be light.
- Mask elastic. Thread the elastic through the holes and tie knots on the outside. Adjust the length to your head: the mask should fit snugly and not slip off.
Done. The mask is done. Try it on: it should fit snugly and not slip. If it slips, tighten the elastic or re-glue the strip joint tighter.
