Star Tree Topper

Star Tree Topper

A 3D yellow star with orange facets on a white cone with orange stripes — it goes on top of the Christmas tree. The front half folds along the lines into a little pyramid, and the back half is a flat backing; everything is made from one sheet.

On VanGami the template appears over your sheet through your phone camera — no printer needed. Trace it, cut, fold and glue. Below are all the steps in text.

What you’ll need

Steps

Trace

  1. Star: outline. Trace the star with five tabs, one at the side of each point. You’ll cut along the solid line.
  2. Star: folds. From each tip to the center: a dashed line (mountain fold). From each inner corner to the center: a dash-dot line (valley fold). Along the tabs: a dashed line.
  3. Guide sheet: outline. Trace the second star without tabs. It’s a little smaller than the first one. This is the back half.
  4. Cone: outline. Trace the ring sector, a curved band. On its right side is a narrow tab with slanted corners. The sector will roll up into a cone.

Color

  1. Yellow. Color the areas that match this color. Move the marker in one direction — you’ll get fewer streaks.
  2. Orange. Now the areas that match this color.

Cut

  1. Cut out: star. Cut out the star together with the tabs. Take the scissors exactly to the line in the notches between the points.
  2. Cut out: guide sheet. Cut out the backing along the solid line: from each notch to the tip, with straight cuts.
  3. Cut out: cone. Cut out the cone: cut the arcs smoothly, turning the sheet as you go, and the side edges straight.

Fold

  1. The star pops up. Score the lines with an empty pen. Fold the lines on the points like little hills, the lines between the points like little valleys, and the tabs down. Squeeze the star from the edges — the middle will rise.

Glue

  1. Star onto the backing. Spread glue on the five tabs underneath. Lay the star on the backing, tip to tip, and press each tab with a finger.
  2. Roll the cone. Spread glue on the tab and roll up the cone: tab inside, under the left edge, up to the slanted corners. Then squeeze the top of the cone — it becomes a flat flap.
  3. Cone — behind the star. Spread glue on the reverse side of the backing, from the middle to the notch between the bottom points. Press the flattened top of the cone onto it — cone pointing down.

Done

  1. On the tree. Slip the star’s cone over the top of the Christmas tree and turn the star to face the room. The cone sits loosely on a branch up to ¾ in thick.

Done. Your star is done. Slip its cone over the top of the Christmas tree — or stand it on a table: the cone holds it up there too.
