On VanGami the template appears over your sheet through your phone camera — no printer needed. Trace it, cut, fold and glue. Below are all the steps in text.
What you’ll need
- Letter sheet — office paper, 80 gsm (20 lb)
- Markers
- Pencil — and eraser
- Scissors — small
- Glue stick — or PVA glue
- Thread or thin ribbon — 7⅞ in — for the loop
- Glass — phone stand
Steps
Trace
- Circles 1–2: outlines. Trace the two circles with a solid line — you’ll cut along it. The other pairs are lower on the sheet: move the sheet when you get to them.
- Circles 3–4: outlines. Trace the two circles with a solid line — you’ll cut along it.
- Circles 5–6: outlines. Trace the two circles with a solid line — you’ll cut along it.
- Circles 7–8: outlines. Trace the two circles with a solid line — you’ll cut along it.
Color
- Red. The paper is white, but these parts should be this color: color them in completely, up to the outline. Move the marker in one direction.
Cut
- Cut out: circles 1–2 — 2 pcs. Cut out circles 1–2 along the line, turning the sheet, not the scissors: the edge should come out smooth.
- Cut out: circles 3–4 — 2 pcs. Cut out circles 3–4 along the line, turning the sheet, not the scissors: the edge should come out smooth.
- Cut out: circles 5–6 — 2 pcs. Cut out circles 5–6 along the line, turning the sheet, not the scissors: the edge should come out smooth.
- Cut out: circles 7–8 — 2 pcs. Cut out circles 7–8 along the line, turning the sheet, not the scissors: the edge should come out smooth.
Fold
- Fold each circle in half. Fold each circle in half, edge exactly to edge, and crease the fold with your fingernail. If the paper is white on one side, fold it colored side in.
Glue
- The first two. Lay a folded circle with the fold toward you. Put glue on the top half and lay a second folded circle on top — fold exactly on fold, edge on edge.
- A stack of eight. Glue on the other six the same way: each time, glue on the top half, the new circle on top, folds lined up.
- Thread along the fold. Put glue on the top half of the stack. Fold the thread in half and lay it along the whole fold, from edge to edge: the loop sticks out 1⅝–2 in past the edge of the stack.
- Close the ball. Hold the stack by the edges and fan it open: bring the top half with the thread around to the very bottom one and press. The ball is closed.
Check
- Spread it out and hang it. Spread the halves so there are even gaps between them — the ball will turn out round. Hang it on the Christmas tree by the loop.
Done. The ball is done. Hang it on the Christmas tree by the loop. Want more? Make another one from paper in a different color.
