Moon and Stars Garland

A garland for over your bed or for the window: a sleepy, rosy-cheeked moon and three stars on one thread. All the pieces are traced as one block, and the thread is held on with bits of tape — no glue.

What you’ll need

• Letter sheet — office paper, 80 gsm (20 lb)
• Markers
• Pencil — and eraser
• Scissors — small
• Tape — clear, wide
• Thread — white or gold, 23½ in
• Glass — phone stand

Steps

Trace

1. Moon and stars: outlines. Trace the moon and three stars with a solid line — one star sits in the notch of the moon. You’ll cut along these lines.
2. Moon face. On the thick part of the moon, draw closed eyes as little arcs, a smile and two ovals of blush.

Color

3. Yellow. The paper is white, but these parts should be this color on both sides: color them up to the outline, then turn the sheet over and color the back.
4. Color the face. Eyes and smile — black, blush — pink.

Cut

5. Cut out: moon and stars — 4 pcs. Cut out the stars and the moon along the solid lines. Go into the corners between the points with the scissors from both sides.

Garland

6. Lay them out in a row. Lay the pieces face down in a row: two stars, the moon, one more star. Leave 1⅛ in between them, with the top edges roughly in line.
7. Thread and tape. Lay the thread across the pieces ⅝ in below their tops: across the thick part of the moon and across the side points of the stars. Fasten it to each piece with a small piece of tape in the middle. Leave 6¾ in at each end.
8. Hang it up. Lift the garland by the ends of the thread — the pieces will turn to face you. Tie the ends to hooks or tape them to a wall, a window frame or a shelf.

Done. The garland is done. Tie the ends of the thread to hooks or tape them to the wall above your bed or to a window frame: in a draft, the moon and stars will slowly turn.
