Mini Piñata

A star piñata, 3½ in across: a purple drum with flowers on the lids and five striped rays. Put a handful of small candies inside; a thread loop on top lets you hang it or give it as a gift.

What you’ll need

• Letter sheet — office paper, 80 gsm (20 lb)
• Markers
• Pencil — and eraser
• Ruler — 8–12 in
• Empty pen — to score the folds
• Scissors — small
• Glue stick — or PVA glue
• Thread — 11¾ in
• Small candies — 5–6 pieces: small round candies or gummies

Steps

Trace

1. Base: outlines. The long strip is the wall; below it are two pentagon lids with tabs. Use a ruler for the straight lines.
2. Base: folds. On the wall are five lines across; on the lids, the sides of the pentagons. Everything is dashed.
3. Base: drawing. In the middle of each lid, draw a flower: eight petals and a little circle.
4. Points: outlines. Five identical “kites” with two little feet at the bottom. Use a ruler for the straight lines.
5. Points: folds. Line 1 divides the point in half, lines 2 set off the feet. A dashed line is a fold away from you, a dash-dot line is a fold toward you.
6. Points: drawing. The arcs around the tip mark off the bands: the tip, one band and the wide edge with the feet will be colored.

Color

7. Color: base. Wall and lids — purple, tabs included; flowers — pink, centers — yellow.
8. Color: points. Each point in its own color: the tip, one band and the wide edge together with the feet. The bands between them stay white.

Cut

9. Cut out: main parts — 3 pcs. Cut out the wall and both lids along the solid lines. Cut the straight edges along a ruler.
10. Cut out: rays — 5 pcs. Cut out all five rays along the solid line, together with the little feet at the bottom. Between two feet, cut all the way into the corner.

Base

11. Ring and loop. Score the wall lines with an empty ballpoint pen along a ruler and fold them with the drawing facing out — you’ll get a five-sided ring. Fold the thread in half and tie a knot. Spread glue on the tab, lay the thread on it with the knot inside, and press the tab to the first side from the inside.
12. Lids and candies. Fold the lids’ tabs down and spread glue on them on the inside. Put the first lid onto the ring — the tabs lie on the outside of the walls. Flip the ring over, pour in 5–6 small candies and close it with the second lid.

Rays

13. Fold the rays. Spread glue on the back of a ray and fold it in half along line 1, drawing facing out. Fold the feet along lines 2 in opposite directions — the ray will stand on them. Do all five this way.
14. Rays onto the sides. Spread glue on the bottom of the feet and stick the rays in the middle of each side, one at a time: the feet go across the side, and the flat side of the ray faces the lid. Press the feet with your finger.

Check

15. Hang it up. Lift the piñata by the loop: the lid with the flower faces you, and one ray points down. Hang it on a nail, a cabinet handle, or a Christmas tree.

Done. The piñata is done. Hang it by the loop — or give it as a gift: there are candies inside.
