Pizza in a Box

Pizza in a Box

A flat red box with a hinged lid and a round window. Inside is a pizza with eight slices: pepperoni, mushrooms and peppers are drawn with markers. The slices aren't glued down: you can move one onto a paper plate, with an order slip next to it.

On VanGami the template appears over your sheet through your phone camera — no printer needed. Trace it, cut, fold and glue. Below are all the steps in text.

What you’ll need

Steps

Sheet 1

  1. Sheet 1: yellow sheet. A yellow sheet should be under the camera now. The template has 2 sheets. The sheet is white — the pieces get their color at the coloring step.
  2. Quarter 1: outline. Trace the solid line — the edge of the “Quarter 1” piece. You'll cut along it.
  3. Quarter 1: toppings. Copy the wavy edge of the cheese, the pepperoni circles, the pepper strips and a mushroom. It doesn't need to be exact to the millimeter.
  4. Quarter 2: outline. Trace the solid line — the edge of the “Quarter 2” piece. You'll cut along it.
  5. Quarter 2: toppings. Cheese edge, pepperoni, peppers and mushrooms — same as on the first quarter.
  6. Quarter 3: outline. Trace the solid line — the edge of the “Quarter 3” piece. You'll cut along it.
  7. Quarter 3: toppings. Cheese edge, pepperoni, peppers and mushrooms — same as on the first quarter.
  8. Quarter 4: outline. Trace the solid line — the edge of the “Quarter 4” piece. You'll cut along it.
  9. Quarter 4: toppings. Cheese edge, pepperoni, peppers and mushrooms — same as on the first quarter.
  10. Yellow. The paper is white, but these parts should be this color: color them in completely, up to the outline. Move the marker in one direction.
  11. Color: quarter 1. Color the crust orange, the pepperoni red, the pepper green and the mushroom brown. The cheese is already yellow — leave it alone.
  12. Color: quarter 2. Same here: crust orange, pepperoni red, peppers green, mushrooms brown.
  13. Color: quarter 3. Same here: crust orange, pepperoni red, peppers green, mushrooms brown.
  14. Color: quarter 4. Same here: crust orange, pepperoni red, peppers green, mushrooms brown.

Sheet 2

  1. Sheet 2: white sheet. Remove the previous sheet and put the white sheet in its place, lined up edge to edge. Don’t move the phone — the scale stays the same.
  2. Plate: outline. Trace the solid line — the edge of the “Plate” piece. You'll cut along it.
  3. Plate: border. The two circles near the edge are the plate's border.
  4. Sign and order slip: outlines. Trace the order slip rectangle and, next to it, the sign with rounded corners.
  5. Sign and order slip: drawing. On the sign — a big outlined word. On the order slip — a heading, four lines with check marks, a small pizza and a sign-off.
  6. Color: plate. Color the border between the circles blue. Leave the middle white.
  7. Color: sign and order slip. Color the letters on the sign in turn red, orange, green and blue. On the order slip, color the dots and the pizza like the example.

Sheet 3

  1. Two sturdy sheets. Spread a glue stick over a whole sheet of office paper, lay a second sheet on top and smooth it with your palm from the middle to the edges. Glue the second pair the same way: one sturdy sheet becomes the lid, the other the bottom of the box.
  2. Color the sheets (optional). Color the box and lid red, or leave them white. If you color them, do both sturdy sheets all over, on both sides — it takes longer.
  3. Sheet 3: red sheet. Remove the previous sheet and put one of the sturdy sheets in its place, lined up edge to edge. Don’t move the phone — the scale stays the same.
  4. Lid: window. Place the sheet with its middle under the phone and trace the circle with a pencil — this is the lid window. You'll cut it out later.

Cut

  1. Cut out: quarter 1. Cut out the quarter, fold it in half — straight edge to straight edge — and cut along the fold: you get two pizza slices.
  2. Cut out: quarter 2. Cut out the quarter, fold it in half — straight edge to straight edge — and cut along the fold: you get two pizza slices.
  3. Cut out: quarter 3. Cut out the quarter, fold it in half — straight edge to straight edge — and cut along the fold: you get two pizza slices.
  4. Cut out: quarter 4. Cut out the quarter, fold it in half — straight edge to straight edge — and cut along the fold: you get two pizza slices.
  5. Cut out: plate. Cut with scissors along the solid line. Turn the sheet, not the scissors — the cut will come out neater.
  6. Cut out: sign and order slip — 2 pcs. Cut with scissors along the solid line. Turn the sheet, not the scissors — the cut will come out neater.

Box

  1. Square for the bottom. Take the second sturdy sheet. Fold the top left corner over to the right edge — the top edge will lie along the right one. Cut off the strip at the bottom along the edge of the fold and unfold: a 8½ × 8½ in square.
  2. Mark the walls. Use a ruler to measure ¾ in from each edge and draw four lines across the whole square. That leaves a 6⅞ × 6⅞ in bottom in the middle.
  3. Make corner cuts. At the top and bottom, cut along the lines until they cross — four cuts of ¾ in each. The corners on the left and right will become tabs.
  4. Raise the walls. Score the lines with an empty pen along the ruler and raise all four walls. The corner tabs stick out for now.
  5. Glue the corners. Put a piece of double-sided tape on each tab, on the side that will touch the wall. Peel off the film, fold the tab around the corner and press it to the outside of the front or back wall.

Lid

  1. Cut the lid. Measure 1⅞ in from the circle in both directions along the long edge and use a ruler to draw two lines across the sheet. Cut off the ends beyond the lines: you'll have a 7⅛ in strip with the circle in the middle.
  2. Window. Poke the tip of the scissors through the middle of the circle, snip out to the line and cut the circle out with the scissors. You won't need the cut-out circle.
  3. Lid flaps. Use a ruler to draw two lines 1⅞ in from the window, parallel to the short edges: beyond them you'll have strips of ¾ in. Score the lines with the empty pen and fold the strips down at a right angle.
  4. Sign. Glue the sign on with a glue stick between the window and one of the flaps, in the middle of the lid. The letters run along the flap, with their bottoms toward the window.
  5. Put on the lid. Stick two 2 in strips of double-sided tape on the outside of the back wall and peel off the film. Put the lid on: the flap by the sign goes onto the tape, the other one onto the front wall. Press down.

Pizza

  1. Put the pizza in the box. Open the lid and arrange the eight slices in a circle, pointed ends toward the center. Don't glue them: you need to be able to take the slices out.

Check

  1. Close the box. Lower the lid: the second flap lies on the outside of the front wall, and the pizza shows through the window.
  2. Serve the order. Open the box, move a slice onto the plate and put the order slip next to it. Now you can play pizzeria.

Done. The pizzeria is open. Close the box — the pizza shows through the window; open it and serve a slice on the plate with the order slip.
