Tube Buddy: Bunny

A white bunny, 3⅞ in tall, made from a single paper tube: in light blue overalls, with long ears and a carrot in its paws. The top of the head forms by itself — you push the top of the tube inward at the back and at the front. The ears, paws and pom-pom tail are separate pieces.

What you’ll need

• 2 Letter sheets — office paper, 80 gsm (20 lb)
• Markers
• Pencil — and eraser
• Scissors — small
• Glue stick — or PVA glue
• Glass — phone stand

Steps

Trace

1. Sturdy sheet from two. Apply glue stick over the whole surface of a sheet of printer paper, press a second sheet onto it, and smooth with your palm from the middle to the edges. You'll get a thick sheet — work on that one. Put it back in the same spot, edge to edge; don't move the phone.
2. Strip: outline. Trace the strip with the tab above the middle and the two small notches at the top, with rounded bottoms, in a solid line — you’ll cut along it.
3. Strip: crown arcs. The dashed arcs at the top are the folds of the top of the head. Trace them pressing hard: the top will then fold evenly along the scored line. Don’t cut along them.
4. Strip: drawing. Copy with thin lines: the eyes, nose, mouth, and whiskers; two short marks above the eyes, where the ears will stand; the overalls with a bib, straps, and buttons; the carrot with its leafy top; and two paws at the bottom. Don’t draw on the white area on the left: it will go under the seam.
5. Small parts: outlines. Trace the two long ears, the two paws, and the fluffy tail with a solid line.
6. Small parts: drawing. In the ears: the inner parts. On the paws: the wrist line and the pads. On the tail: a swirl.

Color

7. Color: strip. Pants, bib, and straps — light blue; carrot — orange; leafy top — green; nose and blush — pink; eyes — black; leave the highlights white. The fur, buttons, and paws at the bottom stay white. Leave a narrow white stripe along the dashed arcs, and go over the outlines in black.
8. Color: small parts. Inner ears and paw pads — pink. Everything else stays white; go over the outlines in black.

Cut

9. Cut out: strip. Cut out the strip together with the tab above the face. At the top of each corner there’s a small notch: a cut from the edge down, around the rounded tip, and a cut back up.
10. Cut out: small pieces — 5 pcs. Cut out two ears, two paws and a tail.

Roll

11. Roll the tube. Apply glue to the white area on the left. Roll the strip with the drawing facing out and lay the right edge over that area, up to the line. Press the seam for 10 seconds.

Fold

12. Top of the head: back. Turn the tube with the seam facing you. Press your finger on the top edge above the seam: it will dent inward along the scored arc, and rounded corners will stand up at the sides.
13. Top of the head: front. Turn the bunny to face you. Apply glue to the underside of the tab above the face, from inside the tube, and press in the front of the top the same way: the tab will lie on top of the back half.

Assemble

14. Ears. Curve the bottom of the ear around the tube. Apply glue to it — from the edge to the pink middle — and glue the ears onto the forehead: the bottom edge of each ear goes on the mark above the eye, and the ears stick up over the head, slightly apart. Press for 30 seconds.
15. Paws. Apply glue to the back of each paw from the shoulder to the wrist line; don’t glue the hand. Glue the paws on the sides, slanting inward: the hands rest on the ends of the carrot — the bunny is holding it.
16. Stem. Curve the tail around the tube, cover it all with glue and glue it onto the back above the seam, low down — on the pants. Press for 10 seconds.

Check

17. Stand it on the table. Set the bunny on the table — it stands by itself. Turn it all the way around: the ears stick up and the tail is at the back.

Done. The bunny is done. Let the glue dry for 10 minutes, then it can go on the shelf.
