What you’ll need

Steps

Trace

  1. Face: outline. Trace the edge of the piece with the two ears using a solid line. You’ll cut along this line.
  2. Face: windows. Trace the two ovals — the eye windows. You’ll cut them out all the way through: the eyes on the slider will show through them.
  3. Face: drawing. Draw the fox with thin lines: hair with bangs and a little bow, ears, a mouth with a fang, a cape with a collar, and a lantern. Don’t draw anything inside the ovals.
  4. Slider and tail: outlines. Trace two pieces with a solid line: the slider — a strip with a rounded end and a bump on the bottom — and the tail.
  5. Slider and tail: drawing. On the slider, in a row from the straight end to the pull tab: arc, eye, arc, eye; on the pull tab, an arrow. On the tail, the zigzag edge of the white tip.
  6. Back: outline. Trace the solid line — the edge of the “Back” piece. You'll cut along it.
  7. Back: markings. Two lines across the back piece — the channel edges: the top one is straight, the bottom one has a notch in the middle.

Color

  1. Color: face. Color the face and hand beige, the hair brown, the ears orange with white tips, the cape turquoise, the skirt navy blue, the lantern and the bow yellow, and the mouth and cheeks pink. Leave the collar and the fang white, and at the end outline the lines in black.
  2. Color: slider and tail. Color the eyes orange with a brown top, the pupil black and the highlight white. Color the pull tab and tail orange and leave the tail tip white; go over the arcs and the arrow in thick black.

Cut

  1. Cut out: face. Cut out the face along the outer line, ears included. Don’t touch the eye ovals yet — you’ll deal with them at the end.
  2. Cut out: slider and tail — 2 pcs. Cut out the slider and the tail. Cut the corners of the bump precisely: they are the stops that keep the strip from falling out.
  3. Cut out: back. Cut out the back piece — a rectangle with rounded corners. Don't cut the marking lines.
  4. Eye windows. Put an eraser underneath and poke through the middle of the oval with the tip of the scissors. From the hole, cut toward the line and then along it in short steps, turning the piece, not the scissors.

Assemble

  1. Apply glue to the back. Apply glue to the back piece above the top line and below the bottom line — including the two areas on either side of the notch. The channel for the slider is between the lines: leave it dry.
  2. Put the slider in the channel. Lay the slider drawing-side up between the lines: bump down, into the notch, pull tab to the right. Push the bump snug against the left area — the left edge of the slider will line up with the edge of the back piece.
  3. Cover with the face. Cover it with the face piece: the bottom and sides line up with the back piece, and the ears stick out above. Press down above the channel and below it — the open eyes show in the windows.
  4. Glue on the tail. Apply glue to the back of the tail — except the white tip — and glue it in the bottom right corner. The bottom of the tail is flush with the edge of the card, and the tip sticks out past the right edge.

Check

  1. Pull the tab. Pull the tab to the right until it stops — the fox squeezes her eyes shut. Push it back in: she looks again.

Done. The card is done. Pull the tab — the fox squeezes her eyes shut; push it back — she looks again.
