Secret Note with a Little Lock

A pink 3⅛ in square folds into a 2¼ in envelope: four corners to the middle, and the tip of the heart tucks into the slit — a little lock. The secret is written inside, on the back.

What you’ll need

• Letter sheet — office paper, 80 gsm (20 lb)
• Markers
• Pencil — and eraser
• Scissors — small
• Pen — write a secret
• Glass — phone stand

Steps

Trace

1. Outline. Trace the square with the little heart on a short stem at the bottom right corner with a solid line.
2. Slit. The short line at the opposite corner is the slit for the little lock, ½ in long. Cut along it too.
3. Fold. Draw four dashed lines: they join the middles of the sides and will fold into a little square envelope.
4. Draw. Copy the little lock-heart, the word “SECRET” on the top right corner, and small hearts on the other corners.

Color

5. Pink. The paper is white, but these parts should be this color: color them in completely, up to the outline. Move the marker in one direction.
6. Color. Color the hearts red and the word black. Leave the highlight on the big heart white.

Cut

7. Cut out: note. Cut out the note along the solid line. Cut slowly around the heart and its neck, turning the sheet.
8. Slit. Lay the note as a diamond, heart to the right. Fold the left corner in half lengthwise without creasing it, cut ¼ in from the fold along the slit line and unfold — you get a ½ in slit.

Fold

9. Write the secret. Flip the note over across the top edge: the drawing is on the bottom, the heart is still on the right. In the middle of the blank side write the secret — with a pen, in the square between the folds.
10. Top and bottom corners. Fold the top and bottom corners to the middle, tips exactly at the center, and crease the folds.
11. Corner with the slit. Fold the left corner to the middle — the one with the slit.
12. Corner with the heart. Fold the right corner to the middle: the heart will lie on the left corner, its tip just past the slit.
13. Little lock. Lift the heart, tuck its tip into the slit — under the left corner — and press. The little lock keeps the note closed.

Check

14. Open. Pull the heart — it comes out of the slit, the corners open and the secret is in view. Fold it back and give it as a gift.

Done. The secret note is done. To open it, pull the heart — it comes out of the slit and the corners open.
