On VanGami the template appears over your sheet through your phone camera — no printer needed. Trace it, cut, fold and glue. Below are all the steps in text.
What you’ll need
- 2 Letter sheets — office paper, 80 gsm (20 lb)
- Markers
- Pencil — and eraser
- Scissors — small
- Glue stick — or PVA glue
- Glass — phone stand
Steps
Sheet 1
- Sheet 1: white sheet. The white sheet should be under the camera now. The template has 1 sheets.
- Tail: outline. Trace the fan with a solid line: seven round feathers and a straight edge at the bottom. You’ll cut along this line.
- Tail: fold. The line down the middle is a dash-dot line, from the tip of the middle feather to the straight edge. The tail is folded along it, not cut.
- Tail: drawing. Draw the borders between the feathers and the shaft down the middle of each feather. At the bottom is a half circle: the base of the tail.
- Body: outline. Trace the head, the round body and the two triangular tabs at the bottom with a solid line.
- Body: folds. Three dash-dot lines: one down the middle, from the top of the head to the tabs, and one above each tab. You fold along them; you don’t cut.
- Body: drawing. Eyes with highlights, beak, wattle, cheeks, light belly, two wings, feet at the bottom and toes on the tabs — with thin lines.
- Color: tail. Feathers — red, orange and yellow, as on the screen; the half circle at the bottom — brown. Outline the feather borders and the edge in black.
- Color: body. Body — brown; leave the belly and the whites of the eyes white. Feet, toes and beak — orange and yellow, wattle — red, cheeks — pink. Pupils and outline — black.
Sheet 2
- Card base. This sheet isn’t traced: it gets folded in quarters — first along line 1, then along line 2. You’ll see how at the “Fold” stage.
Fold
- Fold the sheet in half. Lay the beige sheet vertically and fold it in half: top edge to bottom edge, corners exactly on corners. Crease the fold with your fingernail.
- In half again. Keep the fold at the top. Fold again: left edge to right edge, crease, and open it like a book. Inside are the card’s two inner pages, with the fold still at the top.
Cut
- Cut out: tail. Cut out the tail along the solid line. Cut the notches between the feathers from both sides, so the cuts meet.
- Cut out: body. Cut out the body along the solid line, including the two tabs at the bottom. Between the tabs there’s a sharp notch: cut into it from both sides.
Glue
- Fold. Fold the body down the middle with the drawing inside, then unfold it. Fold both tabs toward the drawing and unfold them too. Fold the tail down the middle the same way.
- Tail behind the body. Lay the tail drawing side up and spread glue on the brown semicircle. Place the body on top: its fold exactly on the tail’s fold, and the straight edge of the tail level with the tops of the wings. Press down.
- Turkey into the card. Fold the turkey down the middle with the drawing inside. Spread glue on the back of the bottom tab and lay the turkey on the right page, with its fold toward the card’s fold: the slanted edge of the tab exactly along the card’s fold, the bottom of the tab ¾–1⅛ in from the bottom edge, and the head toward the top fold.
- Second tab. Spread glue on the top tab too, on its back — it’s facing up. Close the card and press firmly: the tab will stick to the left page by itself.
Check
- Open the card. Open the card and lay it on the table: the turkey stands up and fans out its tail. Close it and the turkey folds down inside. Write a greeting on the cover.
Done. The card is done. Close it and open it again — every time, the turkey stands up and fans out its tail. Write a greeting on the cover.
