Mini Lotus in the Window

A card made from a Letter sheet folded in four. Closed, the lotus peeks out of a round window on the cover. Open it into an L shape — it moves inside and stands on a step above the water.

What you’ll need

• 2 Letter sheets — office paper, 80 gsm (20 lb)
• Markers
• Pencil — and eraser
• Scissors — small
• Glue stick — or PVA glue
• Ruler — 8–12 in

Steps

Sheet 1

1. Sheet 1: white sheet. The white sheet should be under the camera now. The template has 1 sheets.
2. Lotus and water lily: outlines. The circle is the water lily, and next to it are two stars with eight petals each: a big one and a small one.
3. Lotus and water lily: drawing. On the water lily, draw a V-shaped notch and veins; on the petals, veins; in the middle of the small star, a circle with dots.
4. Step: outline. A rectangle, 3⅞ × 2⅜ in, with a ruler. The lotus will stand on it.
5. Step: folds. Three lines across, dashed. Write the numbers 1, 2, 3: the water will be between lines 1 and 3, and the edges are tabs.
6. Color: lotus and water lily. Color the water lily green, the big star light pink, the small one pink, and the circle yellow.
7. Light blue. Color the areas that match this color. Move the marker in one direction — you’ll get fewer streaks.

Sheet 2

8. Sheet 2: card sheet. Take the card sheet. You don’t need the camera here — follow the diagram on the screen.
9. Card base. Fold the sheet in half, short edge to short edge (line 1), then in half again (line 2), and crease the folds with your fingernail. You get a 4¼ × 5½ in card.

Cut

10. Cut out: lotus and water lily — 3 pcs. Cut out the water lily and both stars along the solid line. Between the petals, cut all the way into the corner.
11. Cut out: step. Cut out the step using a ruler: straight edges make a straight step.

Window

12. Window in the cover. Close the card with the spine away from you. Lay the water lily on the cover in the middle, with its edge 1 in from the spine, and trace around it. Open the card and cut out the circle in the cover only, through both of its layers: poke a hole in the middle with the tip of the scissors and cut out to the line.

Glue

13. Step into the card. Fold the step along lines 1, 2, 3 with the drawing facing out and fold it along line 2. Lay it on the bottom half of the open card, in the middle, short side down: tab 1 toward the spine, line 1 2¼ in from it. Glue the bottom tab. Spread glue on top of the upper one, close the card, press it, and open it into an L shape.
14. Lotus onto the step. Glue the small star onto the middle of the big one — petals between petals — and bend all the petals up. Glue the water lily onto the platform in the middle, with its notch toward the edge of the card, and the lotus into the middle of the water lily.

Check

15. Close and open. Close the card: the platform will come up to the cover, and the lotus will peek out of the window. Open it into an L shape — it goes back onto the step.

Done. The card is done. Closed, the lotus peeks out of the window; open it into an L shape — it will stand on the step above the water.
