Little Witch Standee

Little Witch Standee

A little witch figure made of five layers: a back layer with a cloak and a kitten, a dress, a head, a hat with a star, and a broom. The layers sit on pieces of foam tape, and the hat brim is curved — it and the broom cast a real shadow.

On VanGami the template appears over your sheet through your phone camera — no printer needed. Trace it, cut, fold and glue. Below are all the steps in text.

What you’ll need

Steps

Trace

  1. Sturdy sheet from two. Apply glue stick over the whole surface of a sheet of printer paper, press a second sheet onto it, and smooth with your palm from the middle to the edges. You'll get a thick sheet — work on that one. Put it back in the same spot, edge to edge; don't move the phone.
  2. Back layer: outline. Trace the solid line, including the two stand tabs at the bottom — you’ll cut along it. It runs 1/16 in outside the drawing, so it doesn’t need to be exact.
  3. Back layer: fold. At the bottom, draw the fold line for the stand tabs: a dashed line on the left, a dash-dot line on the right. Don't cut along it.
  4. Back layer: drawing. Draw the shoulder-length hair, the cloak with a zigzag hem, the kitten on the right, and the legs in boots with thin lines. Little squares show where the foam tape goes; the short line marks the middle of the collar.
  5. Dress: outline. Trace the solid line — you’ll cut along it. It runs 1/16 in outside the drawing, so it doesn’t need to be exact.
  6. Dress: drawing. The dress has a stripe along the hem, a white pointed collar, a bow, and sleeves: the left is long, toward the broom; the right ends in a fist.
  7. Head: outline. Trace the solid line — you’ll cut along it. It runs 1/16 in outside the drawing, so it doesn’t need to be exact.
  8. Head: drawing. Side-swept bangs and two strands by the cheeks. Face: oval eyes with a highlight, blush, and a small mouth.
  9. Hat: outline. Trace the solid line — you’ll cut along it. It runs 1/16 in outside the drawing, so it doesn’t need to be exact.
  10. Hat: drawing. An oval for the brim, a cone with a bent tip, a band at the base, and a star on the band.
  11. Base and broom: outlines. Trace the base circle and, below it, the broom with a solid line — the broom lies on its side. The line sits 1/16 in outside the drawing, so don’t worry about being exact.
  12. Base and broom: drawing. On the base: a ring along the edge and three stars. Broom: the handle, a bundle of twigs with a binding, and the fist.

Color

  1. Color: back layer. Cloak in lilac, boots and a ¾ in band along the edge of the hair in brown, the gap between the legs in navy blue. On the kitten, color the eyes yellow first, then everything around them black; go over the drawing lines with black.
  2. Color: dress. Dress and sleeves in navy blue, the hem band in lilac, the bow in purple, the fist in skin tone. Leave the collar white and outline the drawing lines in black.
  3. Color: head. Hair in brown, face in skin tone, eyes in purple, blush and mouth in pink. You can skip the top of the head: the hat will cover it; outline the drawing lines in black.
  4. Color: hat. Hat in purple, band in navy blue, star in yellow. Outline the drawing lines in black.
  5. Color: base and broom. Ring along the edge of the base and the binding in purple, stars and twigs in yellow, handle in brown, fist in skin tone. Leave the middle of the base white and outline the drawing lines in black.

Cut

  1. Cut out: back layer. Cut out the back layer along one outline, including the stand tabs at the bottom. Between the tabs, make a short cut to the fold line.
  2. Cut out: dress. Cut with scissors along the solid line. Turn the sheet, not the scissors — the cut will come out neater.
  3. Cut out: head. Cut with scissors along the solid line. Turn the sheet, not the scissors — the cut will come out neater.
  4. Cut out: hat. Cut with scissors along the solid line. Turn the sheet, not the scissors — the cut will come out neater.
  5. Cut out: base and broom — 2 pcs. Cut out the base circle and the broom. Cut the circle by turning the sheet, not the scissors.
  6. Cut off the prop. Measure ⅝ in from any free, straight edge of the sheet with a ruler, draw a line, and cut off a strip 3½ in long along it. This is the prop — it holds the figure up from behind.

Assemble

  1. Add volume. Wind the edge of the back layer with the kitten, the hat tip and the broom twigs around a pencil drawing side in — they will curl toward you. Press the head and the hat against the glass, drawing side out, and smooth them with your palm: they will bulge outward.
  2. Dress onto the back layer. Put two pieces of foam tape on the little squares below the short line and peel off the backing. Lay down the dress: the middle of the collar on the short line, the long sleeve pointing left.
  3. Head above the dress. Put two stacks of foam tape on the squares above the short line, with two pieces on top of each other in each: the head will sit higher than the dress. The top of the head lines up with the top of the back layer, and the chin slightly overlaps the collar.
  4. Hat — onto the head. Put two pieces of foam tape on the top of the head. Set the hat so the brim covers the top of the bangs and the face stays uncovered.
  5. Broom — into the hand. Put one piece of foam tape on the end of the long sleeve and a stack of two pieces, one on top of the other, on the square by the edge of the cloak. The broom stands on the left: the fist rests on the sleeve.

Base

  1. Fold out the stand tabs. The back layer has two stand tabs at the bottom. Fold the left one back and the right one forward: hold a ruler against the fold line and fold along it.
  2. Glue to the base. Apply glue to the underside of the stand tabs and set the figure in the middle of the base. Press each tab for 10 seconds.
  3. Glue the prop. Fold both ends of the prop ⅝ in in the same direction and apply glue to the outside. Glue the bottom end to the base near the back edge, and press the top end to the back layer while holding the figure upright.
  4. Check. The figure stands straight and doesn't wobble: the prop holds it from behind. If it leans, peel off the top end of the prop, straighten the figure, and press it down again.

Done. The little witch is done: she stands on her star base, and the kitten peeks out from behind her shoulder.
