Cone Doll: Little Witch

Cone Doll: Little Witch

A little witch, 4¾ in tall: the dress is a paper cone, the head is folded from two halves, and the hat is a second cone on a brim with a slit. She holds a broom, and a black kitten sits on the hat brim.

What you’ll need

Steps

Trace

  1. Dress: outline. Trace the solid line: the two straight sides from the pointed corner and the arc at the bottom. You'll cut along it.
  2. Dress: drawing. Trace the drawing with thin lines. Three more lines: along the right straight edge, the edge of the glue strip (don’t color the strip); near the sharp corner, a short arc, the neck line; and on the side, a short straight line, the mark: you’ll glue the tab to it.
  3. Head and broom: outlines. Trace 2 pieces with a solid line: head, broom. You will cut along these lines.
  4. Head and broom: folds. Draw a dashed line on the top of the head — the head folds in half along it — and a line at the broom's sleeve. Don't cut along dashed lines.
  5. Head and broom: drawing. Copy the drawing with thin lines: the picture on the screen is your guide. It doesn't have to be exact to the millimeter.
  6. Hat, brim, and kitten: outlines. Trace 3 pieces with a solid line: hat, brim, kitten. You will cut along these lines.
  7. Hat, brim, and kitten: slit. The line across the brim is the slit: it is solid too, so cut along it.
  8. Hat, brim, and kitten: folds. The hat's four tabs get a dash-dot line: they fold outward. The line by the kitten's paws is dashed: that tab folds back. Don't cut along fold lines.
  9. Hat, brim, and kitten: drawing. Copy the drawing with thin lines: the picture on the screen is your guide. It doesn't have to be exact to the millimeter.

Color

  1. Color: dress. Jagged hem, cuff, and crescent moons — lilac; stars — yellow; bow and buttons — purple; hand — skin tone. The dress stays white; trace the drawing lines in black.
  2. Color: head and broom. Hair and broom handle — brown; eyes and broom binding — purple; bow at the back of the head and cuff — lilac; face and fist — skin tone; blush and mouth — pink; bristles — yellow. The sleeve stays white; trace the drawing lines in black.
  3. Color: hat, brim, and kitten. Hat stripes and brim edge — purple; stars — yellow. On the kitten, first the eyes — yellow, then the whole kitten — black; nose — pink. Don't color the tabs or the middle of the brim.

Cut

  1. Cut out: dress. Cut out the dress along the outline: cut the straight sides in one motion, and turn the sheet as you cut the arc.
  2. Cut out: head and broom — 2 pcs. Cut out the head in one piece — face and back of the head together; don't cut along the dashed line on top. Cut out the broom together with its tab.
  3. Cut out: hat, brim, and kitten — 3 pcs. Cut out the hat together with its four tabs, and the brim. Cut out the kitten together with its tab. The slit in the brim: fold the brim in half across the slit and cut from the fold to the end of the line.
  4. Color the back. Flip the broom and the kitten face down and color the back: on the broom, the handle brown and the bristles yellow; the kitten all black, tab included. The drawing shows through a little — follow it.

Glue

  1. Roll the dress. Apply glue to the narrow strip along the right edge. Roll the piece into a cone with the drawing facing out and lay the left edge over the strip up to the line: the bottom should become an even circle. Press the seam.
  2. Head on top. Flatten the top of the dress with your fingers down to the neck line — the seam goes at the back. Lay the head face down, unfolded, and apply glue to the whole back side. Place the flattened top on the half with the face — the neck line along the bottom edge of the head — and cover it with the back of the head, folding along the dashed line. Hold for 20–30 seconds.
  3. Roll the hat. The hat rolls up the same way: glue on the narrow strip, drawing outside, sharp tip. Fold the four tabs at the bottom outward.

Assemble

  1. Broom. Fold the sleeve tab back along the dashed line, apply glue to it, and press it to the left side of the dress: the broom stands with its bristles on the table and faces forward. The fold goes at the mark on the side. Hold for 20–30 seconds until the glue sets.
  2. Hat onto the brim. Lay the brim with the slit running left to right. Apply glue to the underside of the hat’s tabs and set the hat in the middle of the brim with the star facing you and the seam facing away: the slit will end up inside the hat. Press down each tab.
  3. Kitten onto the brim. Fold the kitten's tab back, apply glue to its underside, and set the kitten on the brim to the right of the hat, facing forward.
  4. Put on the hat. Apply glue to the head in a strip across near the top — front and back, where the brim will sit. Slip the brim onto the top of the head by its slit, star facing forward, and slide it down until the slit fits snugly: the bangs peek out from under the brim. Hold for 20–30 seconds so the hat doesn’t tip forward under the kitten.

Done. The little witch is done: she stands on her hem, the broom leans on the table, and the kitten sits on the hat’s brim. Put her on a shelf for Halloween, or give her as a gift.
