Bear Hug Card

Bear Hug Card

The teddy bear hugs itself with accordion-folded paws, and your message is hidden under them on its tummy. Pull the paws apart: the bear opens its arms 11⅜ in wide.

On VanGami the template appears over your sheet through your phone camera — no printer needed. Trace it, cut, fold and glue. Below are all the steps in text.

What you’ll need

Steps

Trace

  1. Head: outline. Trace the solid line — the edge of the “Head” piece. You’ll cut along it.
  2. Head: drawing. Copy the face with thin lines: eyes with a highlight, nose, mouth, the face outline and the inner ears.
  3. Body: outline. Trace the solid line — the edge of the “Body” piece. You’ll cut along it.
  4. Body: drawing. Trace the tummy, the little heart and the paws at the bottom. Under the heart there are two lines: you’ll write your message on them.
  5. Paws: outline. Trace both paws with a solid line — long strips with a round end.
  6. Paws: folds. Across each paw there are three fold lines: two dashed and the middle one dash-dot. The narrow strip past the first dashed line, at the straight edge, is the tab for glue.
  7. Paws: pads. On the round end of each paw, draw one big pad and three small ones. Draw on the same side you traced on.

Color

  1. Beige. The paper is white, but these parts should be this color: color them in completely, up to the outline. Move the marker in one direction.
  2. Head: coloring. Color the inner ears brown, the cheeks pink, and the eyes and nose black. Don’t color the highlight. The face stays the color of the paper.
  3. Body: coloring. Color the little heart red and the pads at the bottom brown.
  4. Paws: coloring. Color the pads pink. The rest stays the color of the paper.

Cut

  1. Cut out: head. Cut with scissors along the solid line. Turn the sheet, not the scissors — the cut will come out neater.
  2. Cut out: body. Cut with scissors along the solid line. Turn the sheet, not the scissors — the cut will come out neater.
  3. Cut out: paw — 2 pcs. Cut with scissors along the solid line. Turn the sheet, not the scissors — the cut will come out neater.

Fold

  1. Accordion-fold the paws. First flip the paws over and color the other side beige: you’ll see it when the bear opens its arms. Fold each paw like an accordion along the lines and crease with your fingernail: dashed line — mountain fold (away from you), dash-dot line — toward you. Then open them back out.

Glue

  1. Head onto the body. Put glue on the back of the head — only the bottom, ⅝ in up — and glue it to the top of the body, chin down.
  2. Paws on the sides. Flip the bear face down. Put glue on the paw’s tab on the side without the drawing and glue it to the edge of the body: the first dashed line goes exactly along the edge, and the paw sticks out to the side, pads up. Do the second one the same way on the other side.
  3. Message. Flip the bear face up and write your message on the lines under the heart: “Big hugs,” “Happy Birthday,” or a name.
  4. Close the hug. Fold each paw into its accordion and bend it over the edge onto the tummy: the pads meet in the middle and cover the message.

Check

  1. Open the hug. Pull the paws apart by their pads — the bear opens its arms and shows your message. Fold them back into accordions.

Done. The bear is done. Close the paws and the message is hidden; pull the pads and the bear opens its arms.
