On VanGami the template appears over your sheet through your phone camera — no printer needed. Trace it, cut, fold and glue. Below are all the steps in text.
What you’ll need
- 2 Letter sheets — office paper, 80 gsm (20 lb)
- Markers
- Pencil — and eraser
- Scissors — small
- Glue stick — or PVA glue
- Glass — phone stand
Steps
Sheet 1
- Sheet 1: white sheet. The white sheet should be under the camera now. The template has 1 sheets.
- Bat: outline. Trace the bat with a solid line: ears, wings with scalloped edges at the bottom, feet.
- Bat: folds. Three lines: a dashed line down the middle is a mountain fold (away from you); near the wing tips are dash-dot lines — those are tabs, and they’ll get glue.
- Bat: drawing. Eyes, ears, cheeks, a mouth with fangs and wing fingers — three lines from each wrist.
- Small parts: outlines. Trace the crescent moon and the little bat next to it.
- Small parts: drawing. Spots on the moon; on the little bat — eyes, ears and wing fingers.
- Color: bat. Color the whole bat purple, tabs too. Make the eyes yellow with a black pupil, the insides of the ears and the cheeks pink, and leave the fangs white. Color the fingers and the edge black.
- Color: small parts. Color the moon pale yellow: press lightly with a yellow marker, or use a pencil. Color the little bat like the big one.
Sheet 2
- Orange: color the sheet (optional). The sheet is white. You can color it in this color all over before marking it out (that takes longer) — or leave it white: the craft will come out white.
- Card base. This sheet isn’t traced: it gets folded in quarters — first along line 1, then along line 2. You’ll see how at the “Fold” stage.
Fold
- Fold the sheet in half. Place the orange sheet in portrait orientation and fold it in half: top edge to bottom edge, corners exactly on corners. Crease the fold with your fingernail.
- In half again. Keep the fold at the top. Fold again: left edge to right edge, crease, and open it like a book. These are the inside pages of the card.
Cut
- Cut out: bat. Cut out the bat as one piece. Cut the notches between the wing fingers one at a time, turning the sheet.
- Cut out: moon and little bat — 2 pcs. Cut out the moon and the little bat. Cut the sharp tips of the moon with two cuts that meet.
Glue
- Fold the bat. Fold the bat in half along the middle line, drawing side out, and open it. Fold the tabs at the wing tips along the lines toward you. Set the bat on its tabs — it will stand up in a peak.
- Bat into the card. Put glue on the back of the tabs. Place the bat inside the open card: the middle line goes exactly over the card’s fold, the ears 1⅛ in from the top edge, and the tabs 1⅛ in from the fold. Press the tabs down.
- Close the card. Slowly close the card: the bat will fold up inside on its own, wings toward the edge. Press it flat and open it again — the bat will rise up.
- Moon and little bat. Glue the moon on the cover, at the top right, and the little bat below it, slightly at an angle.
Done
- Open the card. Stand the card up like a book and open it: the bat rises out of the fold and spreads its wings. Write your greeting under it.
